Two things stood out at this wedding. (Besides the love and that colouuuuuur palette) 16 years shooting weddings and this is rare to see.
\nThe groom asked his SISTER to be in his wedding party. A girl?! Blasphemy. \ud83d\ude02
\nAnd the parties weren\u2019t even equal. What?! Crazy.
\nThis one hit home. One of my best friends didn\u2019t ask me to be in his wedding party. Because I was a girl. \u201cNot what you do.\u201d
\nSo seeing this now? Lovely.
\nWhere does the \u201cgendered, equal wedding party\u201d thing even come from? Ancient Rome. Roman law required witnesses, and the party dressed alike to confuse evil spirits. Thousands of years later, we\u2019re still doing it. Not because it means anything to you. Just because \u201cthat\u2019s how it\u2019s done.\u201d
\nYour wedding happens once. ONCE. Blink and it\u2019s gone.
\nSo take it in. With the people you actually love (and trust).
\nInvite who YOU want. Wedding party who YOU want, if any. Celebrate how YOU want.
\nToo often I see couples pushed around by everyone else\u2019s opinions.
\n\u201cI have to ask her, she asked me first.\u201d\u2028\u201cI have to have an all girls party.\u201d\u2028\u201cI have to serve meat, I\u2019m vegan, but people will complain.\u201d\u2028\u201cI have to wear this, it means a lot to her and our culture.\u201d\u2028\u201cI have to invite her, she\u2019s friends with my mom.\u201d
\nYou don\u2019t have to do anything.
\nTraditions. Gendered parties. \u201cSides.\u201d Getting ready separately. Inviting people just because they invited you.
\nNone of it is mandatory.
\nLet\u2019s trade \u201cBUT I HAVE TO\u201d for \u201cBUT I WANT TO.\u201d
