MONTREAL PHOTO LOCATIONS FOR PROPOSALS

Planning a proposal in Montreal? You’re in the right place. This city is full of dreamy spots that are just made for popping the question—whether you’re into skyline views, quiet cobblestone streets, or lakeside sunsets. I’ve photographed dozens of proposals and trust me, you don’t need to overthink it. The magic is already in the moment—you just need the right backdrop.

When you book your proposal session with me, I help you narrow down the perfect location by email (with real-time photos and map pins if needed!). I’ll also guide you on exactly where to stand, how to position yourselves, and how we’ll signal each other on the day so it’s seamless. We’ll share our locations so I know when you’re close and you know exactly where I am. After the big “yes,” we do a relaxed one-hour photoshoot so you can remember the moment forever—real emotions, happy tears, and all.

Old Port (Vieux-Port)

The Old Port is beautiful but can sometimes feel a bit overdone. That said, there are still a few standout spots worth considering:

  • “OLD PORT” sign near Scena – This specific location is right beside Scena on Quai Jacques-Cartier (look it up on Google Maps). There’s a balcony there that overlooks the city. It’s private in terms of space, but there will be a crowd below.
  • Near the marina – Look for the railing just west of the Centre des sciences; it offers a beautiful, elevated view of the city across the water.
  • Alexandria Port – There’s a wide staircase here with a view of the Old Port buildings. It’s a public spot, so expect occasional passersby.
  • Behind the Ferris Wheel – There’s a little passerelle (footbridge) where you can see the clock tower in the distance—very charming.

⚠️ Old Port is extremely busy, especially on weekends. Opt for a weekday to avoid large crowds.

Quieter Streets of Old Montreal

Just outside the tourist-heavy areas of the Old Port, there are quiet cobblestone streets that feel more intimate. While you won’t get iconic views like the clock tower or skyline, you’ll have less foot traffic and a very romantic, European vibe.

Beaver Lake (Lac aux Castors)

This peaceful area has a lovely lake surrounded by greenery and forest trails. In summer, you can rent small paddle rafts and enjoy the water before or after your moment. There’s also an ice cream stand open in warmer months.

Belvedere Lookout Point (Kondiaronk Belvedere)

A popular choice thanks to its panoramic city view. It’s located near the Chalet du Mont-Royal. This spot is usually crowded, especially around sunset—but sunset isn’t ideal here anyway, as the sun sets behind the mountain. Early morning is much quieter and has a soft light that works beautifully.

✨ Many people bring a picnic and then propose; it adds a relaxed, thoughtful touch.

Île Jean-Drapeau
Just a short metro ride from downtown, Île Jean-Drapeau gives you a mix of open green spaces and some of the best city views around. You can walk along the water with the skyline in the background, explore near the Biosphere for a modern, architectural feel, or find a quiet bench surrounded by cherry trees (at the right time of the year). In spring, the blossoms here are gorgeous; in fall, the colours pop. It’s also a spot where you can get both nature and urban elements in the same session without having to move far. Weekdays are best for avoiding cyclists and runners on the paths.

Cité du Havre Park

This hidden gem offers one of the best skyline views in the city—including the Ferris wheel and Old Montreal. It’s very open and sunny, especially later in the day. It’s also less crowded than many other lookout spots.

Parc Lafontaine & Plateau Area

  • Parc Lafontaine often has large sections under construction—check ahead. That said, the Plateau around it offers lots of vibrant backdrops:
  • Rue Drolet & Rue Roy E. – Look for colourful painted houses.
  • Rue Saint-Dominique & Rue Napoleon – Known for local murals and graffiti walls.

These spots offer personality and character for more playful or artsy couples.

Botanical Garden (Jardin Botanique)

Gorgeous setting—but keep in mind:

Entrance fee is required. Photography sessions are $250 + admission (approx. $20–25 per person).

It can get very crowded, especially in spring and summer.

If you’re feeling brave and discreet, some couples try to sneak a few photos without a permit—but it’s risky.

Mont-Tremblant

A bit farther from Montreal (about 1.5 hours), but absolutely worth it if you’re looking for a weekend getaway proposal. In the fall, the colours are unreal. In the winter, it’s a snow-globe dream. You’ll find mountain views, forest paths, lakes, and charming village vibes all in one place. If you’re both into nature or planning a little trip anyway, this one’s a winner.

Parc Angrignon (in Lasalle) or Parc Réne-Levesque (in Lachine)

Underrated and peaceful. Angrignon has a beautiful lake, big willow trees, and open fields and Réne-Levesque is an Arboretum on the river. Both light up beautifully at golden hour. If you time it right, the sunsets here are epic. It’s also not too busy, which makes it a great pick for quieter moments.

Laval’s Nature Parks

If you’re based off-island or want something just outside Montreal, Laval has some great natural spots—like Parc de la Rivière-des-Mille-Îles or Parc Bernard-Landry. Think walking bridges, waterfront trails, and peaceful wooded areas. It’s low-key, green, and full of charm without the downtown buzz.

Lachine Canal

Great for natural light, reflections, and water views. However, the sunlight here is very harsh and direct around golden hour/sunset, which can be unflattering. Also, there are a lot of cyclists—so timing and day of the week matter.

Westmount Park

Photographers are not allowed inside the Westmount greenhouse, but the park itself is lovely, with old trees, little streams, and a romantic atmosphere.

QUICK TIPS

  • Avoid double locations: For a surprise proposal, stick to one spot—it keeps the moment focused and intentional.
  • Choose a weekday morning: This helps you avoid crowds in almost every popular location.
  • Plan a fancy dinner afterwards: It gives your partner a reason to dress up, without suspecting anything. Plus, you’ll have beautiful portraits and memories to carry into the evening.

No matter which spot speaks to you, the most important thing is that it feels like you. A place that sets the scene, but doesn’t steal the spotlight from your story. If you’re ready to plan the big moment (or just want to explore the options), I’d love to help you pull it off with ease and heart. Let’s make something unforgettable—together.
